Le menú enfant

At the next table are two little girls, around 9.  They sit quietly the whole meal, across from each other.  They take le menu enfant, a hamburger and French fries.  This is our first meal in France, in a lovely hillside town called Obernai in the Alsace.  How COULD this be French food for children?

I have never really spent much time in France, so I am curious.  I have been a few times to Paris. I studied French in school and college.  We’ll see.

The dessert for the menu enfant (which our daughter also took – well, of course!) turns out to be a popsicle served on a plate surrounded by eight sugary sweets in plastic wrappings.  We throw the sweets away.  Even our daughter casts her eyes askance at THAT sugar content
